The Story
As Mill Common and the surrounding woodland underwent redevelopment, there was an opportunity to reconnect the community with this important natural space.
We were commissioned to design an interpretive signage system that would help visitors explore the area, understand its history and discover its wildlife. The project needed to balance education, accessibility and conservation, creating a welcoming experience while encouraging visitors to respect and protect the natural environment.
Through a combination of wayfinding, storytelling, illustration and digital content, the signage was designed to make the site easier to navigate and more engaging for visitors of all ages.
The Challenge
The project involved creating a complete visitor experience from the ground up, with no existing signage, content or visual assets available.
The site presented several challenges, including its location within a protected area of scientific interest, the need to minimise disruption to wildlife, and the practical difficulties of installing signage within a woodland environment with challenging ground conditions.
The signage also needed to be durable, vandal resistant, accessible, bilingual, and able to withstand long-term outdoor use while blending naturally into the landscape.
The Solution
Working closely with the client, conservation specialists and local stakeholders, we planned the visitor routes, signage locations and interpretation strategy while developing the content, illustrations and graphic designs.
We created a complete signage system including entrance signage, trail markers and points of interest, using clear storytelling rather than traditional information panels. Bespoke illustrations and engaging content helped bring the history, wildlife and natural features of Mill Common to life.
For production, we selected locally sourced oak timber frames and durable materials suitable for the woodland environment. Detailed planning, risk assessments and careful installation methods ensured the work was completed safely while protecting the surrounding habitats.
We also created digital content that visitors could access online, extending the experience beyond the physical site.
The Outcome
The completed signage was delivered on time and within budget, providing visitors with an engaging and accessible way to explore Mill Common.
The bilingual interpretation, illustrations and digital resources have helped increase understanding of the site's history and wildlife, with positive feedback from the client, visitors and local community. The area has seen increased engagement, including use by local schools for educational visits and workshops.
Impact
A renewed connection between people and place, transforming Mill Common into an accessible educational resource while encouraging greater awareness and protection of its wildlife and habitats.
By using locally sourced materials and sustainable production methods, the project also supported the local supply chain while creating a long-lasting visitor experience designed to benefit the community for years to come.
